LAB Theater Project was formed in 2015 and is the brainchild of Owen Robertson. LAB was created to provide a path for new works where no way had previously existed in the region. Also, part of LAB’s mission is the growth and development of new theater artists in our community. Since 2015 LAB has produced over 40 new works from playwrights all around the world; moreover, LAB has helped 56 new theater artists have their first professional experience at LAB. Many have gone on to larger markets and continue to work in the field. LAB is firmly committed to its playwright’s first viewpoint and giving an opportunity to those who do not have an opportunity. LAB is an innovative company that was the first professional company to reopen in the pandemic and the first company in the region to live stream productions. This innovation has allowed LAB to reach much more than its usual 35-seat audience, it has given LAB an international following from countries such as South Africa, Italy, India, China, Mexico, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Owen Robertson (Producer) has been an Adjunct Professor of Theatre at Hillsborough Community College since 2019. He is the Founder and Executive Producer of LAB Theater Project, a doctoral candidate at the University of South Florida’s College of Education, and a graduate of the second cohort of the STRIVE program; an entrepreneurship training program offered through Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), in partnership with Hillsborough Community College. Mr. Robertson is a veteran of the United States Army and a Washington, D.C. native. He moved to Tampa in 2003 and currently calls Seminole Heights home. Mr. Robertson’s research and focus as an educator and artist is the growth of theater artists, how they grow and deepen their practice. He is a working professional theater artist with 35 years of experience. He has performed in over 100 productions, directed over 50 productions, is a producer, designer, technical director, stage manager, playwright, and novelist. His published and produced works are: Toby’s game, At the Lightpost, So Long Life, Creating Monsters, It Happened Then, and Chasing Adam.
