First generation students are those who are the first in their family to attend college, students like Amanda, who recently expressed her appreciation for the scholarship she received and talked about the difference that it will make in her success:

I am a student at HCC and in the future, I plan to be a teacher. I am currently working in the Hillsborough County school system as a paraprofessional while I am studying to become a teacher. I have always enjoyed working with children and these past few years at my job have solidified my want to work with children and watch them grow.

I initially started college when I was 24 years old. At the time, I was a single mom of one, I was working full-time and attending HCC full-time. Life got the best of me and I ended up having to stop school after two semesters. I then had my second child and tried to continue my education, but it was very hard for a single mom of two who worked full-time to find help. Unfortunately, I was not able to complete my associate’s degree.

Fast forward to the present, my life is in a different place. My children are almost grown and very independent and I am finally able to focus on my education and finish my degree. After this semester I will be half-way done with my associate’s degree and I could not be happier about being selected for the scholarship. My husband and I are trying to put our older two kids through college and adding the cost of my education onto it has not been very easy, so this scholarship will help lighten our load.

Thank you again for making these scholarships available to us students in need. It is donors like your that make it possible for so many students to take the classes they need to become a college graduate and further their educations.
